Celebration Day Press Kit:

Press Release, Statewide Agenda of Events

What is it? The Legislative Build is an advocacy event in 2008 that matches Michigan Senators and Michigan Representatives with community development projects in their district - with the goal of a legislator working on a project in every district!

Goals of the Legislative Build:

  • To educate the state legislature and general public of Michigan of the need for affordable housing and economic development within our communities.
  • To demonstrate economic impact of programs that produce affordable housing, economic and downtown development projects
  • Provide a learning experience for affordable housing providers to receive exposure to and training on how to engage decision makers for increased attention and subsequently more resources to advance their missions.

Community Development Activities will include:

  • Affordable housing construction projects
  • Downtown development projects
  • Neighborhood cleanups/fix-ups
  • Demolitions and deconstructions
  • Ribbon cutting or celebrations as supplemental to involvement in physical participation with improvement projects noted above

Pictured above (right to left), the Legislative Advisory Committee is:

Senator Mark Jansen (R), District 28: "This project truly celebrates partnership, both across the aisle and among the many organizations and associations and individuals. What a great example of collaboration effecting change!"

Senator Martha Scott (D), District 2: “This is a wonderful opportunity to expose legislators to the many community-based organizations that are working in their own districts to provide housing, neighborhood improvements and downtown economic development.”

Representative Steve Tobocman (D), District 12: "Everyone deserves a safe, warm place to live. That's why the Legislative Build involves all of us, Democrats, Republicans, Senate and House. By participating in our home districts we can be part of a true statewide effort to provide housing and spur economic development."

Representative John Proos (R), District 79: "This is a grass-roots effort that will create statewide awareness. This project is not just a learning experience; it's a chance to get in touch with the many volunteer opportunities that exist helping our local communities and Michigan families."
